Helping you bring your imaginary worlds to life on the page

about

rae Swabey

Hello, my name is Rae and I live just outside Brighton with my husband, three children and far too many books.I love working with individual authors, whether they are planning to self publish or looking for agent representation in the hope of being traditionally published. Before training as a fiction copyeditor, I spent 17 years as a subeditor for local and regional newspapers. But my first love was always fiction. I read widely across many genres, and am very happy to edit across genres too.As a writer of speculative fiction myself, I am always happy in alternative worlds, or twisted versions of our own, and specialise in helping writers bring imaginary times, places and creatures to life on the page. There's nothing I love more than helping a writer hone their vision and convey it in a way that makes the reader feel as though they're there.I offer a variety of services for writers at all stages. Get in touch to see how I can help you tell your stories.

worldbuilding

your world, realised

Whatever stage you're at with your writing project, a worldbuilding consultation can help you make your vision feel more real on the page.I will help you:
~ Hone in on what you want your world to look, sound, smell, taste and feel like
~ Organise and clarify your ideas so individual features combine and interact to create a cohesive fictional world
~ Show the impact of political structures, magic systems and environmental and geographic characteristics on your characters
And I will give you tips and tricks for weaving your worldbuilding into a compelling narrative.

great minds don't think alike

so many ways to build a world

Famously, Tolkien designed Middle Earth as a world to house the family of languages he had created. Ursula K Le Guin started with anthropological or sociological questions and invented planets on which to test them out. N K Jemisin's approach was to treat geology and the earth itself as a hostile, vengeful antagonist and built her stories from there. When it comes to dreaming up worlds, some people like to talk things through, others prefer to write notes or scenes, while others would rather draw mind maps. Or, indeed, actual maps.We all have different ways of thinking, working and writing. I am here to support your creative process to the best of my ability. Whether your starting point is your world, your story, your characters or your themes, and whether you communicate best by email, phone, Zoom or voice note, I can help you build your world in a way that works for you.If there are services I haven't listed that you think would help you in your wordbuilding or writing journey, do get in contact and ask. I'll see what I can do!
